Nominated by Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation
Dr. Claire Millhiser Rosenbaum and Mrs. Mildred Millhiser Heltzer transformed a personal loss into a caring mission they have been dedicated to for 35 years. After their father passed away of cancer with no hospice program available, they created the Amy and Charles Millhiser II Hospice Memorial Fund with their mother in 1982 and began transforming end of life care in our community.
Before their endowment, there were few places to turn to for end of life care and support in our area. This transformational gift created Bon Secours Hospice which continues today to support families in need at home or at one of the area Bon Secours hospitals. More recently, Dr. Rosenbaum and Mrs. Heltzer have been front and center for fundraising for the Bon Secours Community Hospice House, a free-standing facility that opened in 2015. The first of its kind in Richmond, this facility takes patients from more than 20 healthcare systems and provided more than 50,000 days of hospice care to patients in 2016 alone.
Dr. Rosenbaum and Mrs. Heltzer have also generously donated their personal financial support and time to Bon Secours. Mrs. Heltzer has been a hospice volunteer since the program’s beginning, also volunteering in the emergency room. Dr. Rosenbaum serves on the Board of Directors for Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation. They have remained so committed to the organization’s culture of help and care that they inspired Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation to nominate them for this award.
Dr. Rosenbaum and Mrs. Heltzer have also individually and collectively supported other great organizations in our community including Lakewood, FeedMore and Beth Ahabah.
The Transformational Philanthropy Award honors those who have created powerful change and compelling outcomes by significantly transforming the reach and scope of an organization. Dr. Claire Millhiser Rosenbaum and Mrs. Mildred Millhiser Heltzer’s quiet, steadfast dedication to Bon Secours has truly changed the availability and quality hospice care for all families in our community.
