Nominated by Gateway Homes, Inc.
Having a safe, comfortable home is something we often take for granted. Mrs. Florence Z. Segal has spent 46 years working to ensure all people in our community have a place to call home. She has magnified the impact of every dollar she and many others have given by donating her time to create and grow local organizations that have served so many in our community.
In 1971 Mrs. Segal co-founded Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) as part of a coalition of Richmond residents concerned about the prevalence of housing discrimination against African-Americans. Supporting fair housing was not popular at the time, but that didn’t stop Mrs. Segal from standing up to combat injustice and giving her time to HOME from the very beginning. Her passion and determination helped to create a strong organization that continues today to address housing discrimination and ensure equal access to housing for all.
Gateway Homes is another organization that wouldn’t be here without the benevolence of Mrs. Segal. In 1983 she co-founded the organization with Dr. William T. Moore and Carol Moore to create a residential treatment center as an alternative to long-term institutional confinement for those suffering from mental illness. Mrs. Segal has been dedicated to Gateway Homes serving as President, Development Committee Chair and Program Chair. Today, she continues to serve as a member of the Development Committee and as the Clinical Committee Chair.
The Volunteer Impact Award honors someone who, in addition to being dedicated to service, is a role model for the next generation of volunteers. Mrs. Florence Z. Segal has lead the way in volunteerism in our community all while pursuing a career in social work that has also positively impacted people across the state. Her life is without a doubt an illustration of the true meaning of philanthropy.
National Philanthropy Day® is a celebration of Central Virginia’s philanthropic spirit. The awards given at the luncheon recognize the leaders in the community who make a true impact on the quality of life, cultural vibrancy, and fabric of our region.
We hope you will consider being a part of this year’s National Philanthropy Day® celebration!
