Nominated by Collegiate School
The student founders of the Collegiate RAMPS (Ramp Access Made Possible by Students) Club took a school challenge to contribute to our community and turned it into a regional organization that has helped to provide and assemble over 300 wheelchair ramps for elderly and disabled individuals. Mobility issues can leave one trapped in the home and make it difficult to perform everyday tasks like getting medical care or grocery shopping. These students dedicate their time to raise funds for and install modular ramps that give people an immediate and permanent improvement to their quality of life.
Mike Dowd, Gray Fain and Coleman Wortham founded RAMPS over 10 years ago while attending Collegiate School. The organization has now grown to include an executive director, encompass clubs at 27 high schools and colleges, and count over 1,000 students as participants.
RAMPS leverages its ability to help by partnering with other community organizations and businesses such as Habitat for Humanity, The ALS Association and the Rotary Club. The students of the Collegiate RAMPS Club show maturity and leadership skills in addition to philanthropy, serving as officers of the student organization and working with Collegiate’s business office to manage financial transactions for the club’s operations.
The staff and faculty at Collegiate were so impressed by the generosity and hard work of the students that they nominated the club for this honor.
The Youth Philanthropy Award is intended for young people who show leadership in fundraising for a cause and serve as role models for other youth. By working to give some of the most vulnerable the freedom and safety to move in and out of their homes, the students of the Collegiate RAMPS Club inarguably demonstrate that you can make a difference in your community no matter your age.
National Philanthropy Day® is a celebration of Central Virginia’s philanthropic spirit. The awards given at the luncheon recognize the leaders in the community who make a true impact on the quality of life, cultural vibrancy, and fabric of our region.
We hope you will consider being a part of this year’s National Philanthropy Day® celebration!
