Mustaches For Kids (M4K) Richmond was born out of two local philanthropists’ desire to find a creative, fun way to raise money for children’s charities in our community. Since its founding in 2003, the organization has grown from fewer than 10 to more than 120 participants, and has raised nearly $500,000 for charities including: Children’s Hospital Foundation, Greater Richmond SCAN, ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, The Founders Center of Commonwealth Autism, and FeedMore.
Inspired by the national chapters in California and New York, M4K Richmond growers spend four weeks each year growing their mustaches while soliciting donations from people in the community, similar to a charity run. The four week growing season culminates in the Stache Bash mustache competition where the total amount the volunteer-run organization raised for the charities it supports is announced.
M4K Richmond’s success has allowed its charities to expand programs to help kids fighting for their lives against hunger, abuse, and illness. ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation was able to launch a new program to combat the negative cognitive effects of treatment for high school aged cancer survivors and help them transition into adulthood. FeedMore was able to provide backpacks, meals, and snacks for 100,000 children this year. Children’s Hospital Foundation was able to provide support for neurosurgery, asthma, intensive care, and orthopedic pediatric physician specialists at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The foundation also uses support from M4K Richmond to help fund the Children’s Hospital Foundation Heart Center, serving children with congenital and acquired heart disease.
The Spirit of Philanthropy Award is intended for an organization serving nonprofits in a unique way that inspires others. M4K Richmond has forged partnerships with local businesses like Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and Richmond Flying Squirrels, magnifying the organization’s impact. In addition to fundraising, the organization’s members volunteer their time at the nonprofits they support. Through its joyful, creative support of vulnerable children in our community M4K Richmond truly embodies the spirit of giving.
