The Ukrop family has been committed to community service and civic engagement for generations. Jim Ukrop took up that mantle spending decades supporting numerous charitable causes and taking the lead on new initiatives that have transformed our community. Jim’s service with Richmond Performing Arts Alliance (RPAA) inspired that organization to nominate him for this honor.
Working his way up from part-time associate to Chairman of the Ukrop’s Super Markets, Jim has been deeply invested in the growth and success of the Richmond community his entire life. In 2001 as the first Board Chair of RPAA, he began spearheading the $74 million fundraising effort to redevelop a barren city block and build what today is Dominion Arts Center, jump-starting the revitalization of the Grace Street corridor in the city. He also gave generously to the campaign to renovate the Landmark Theater (now Altria Theater) including contributing to the endowment that bears his name, the annual fund, special events, and more. He continues to serve RPAA as Chairman Emeritus advising the organization’s board and staff.
The breadth of local organizations Jim has served is remarkable. He currently serves: Communities in Schools of Richmond’s Board of Directors, Greater Richmond Partnership’s Regional Leadership Circle, OneVirginia2021’s Board of Directors, Virginians for High Speed Rail, Venture Richmond’s Executive Committee, and the VCU School of Education Advancement Council.
He previously served on the boards of: Goodwill Industries, Virginia LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), Maymont Foundation, Metropolitan Business Foundation, Richmond Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, St. Christopher’s School, United Way of Greater Richmond, The Valentine, and many other worthy organizations.
Additionally, Jim Ukrop is an ardent supporter of his alma mater, William and Mary. He also enjoys mentoring young professionals instilling in them the commitment to service and community he exhibits.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is intended for an individual who has remained deeply committed to a cause, supported a wide variety of organizations, and inspired philanthropic leadership in others. Jim’s years of exemplary, steadfast service to our community have made an immeasurable impact that will last beyond his lifetime.
